What is EU Payment Services Directive and strong customer authentication?

Read more about the Payment Services Directive and payment security here.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is an EU security requirement designed to make online payments safer. It may require you to verify your identity when making purchases or renewing your Singa Premium subscription. Strong Customer Authentication mainly applies to customers whose payment card or bank is located within the European Economic Area (EEA). Whether authentication is required is ultimately determined by your bank.

What is the PSD2?

PSD2 refers to the Second European Union Payment Services Directive that came into force on 14 September 2019. As a result, security requirements for digital payments were tightened. The purpose of the new Payment Services Directive is to improve payment security and consumer protection. Learn more about PSD2 on the European Banking Authority website here

What does strong authentication mean?

Strong authentication means verifying your identity when making purchases or placing orders online. Depending on your bank, this may mean, for example, authentication with a mobile banking application or bank IDs.

How will the new PSD2 affect purchases?

  • You may need to go through extra steps to verify your identity for all orders or purchases made online. Changing your payment method also requires strong authentication.

  • Additional steps depend on your bank: these may include e.g. using a mobile banking app to confirm a payment, or fingerprint authentication on your mobile device.

How will the new PSD2 affect Singa Premium subscriptions?

  • Most subscription renewals happen automatically. However, your bank may occasionally require you to confirm a renewal payment. If this happens, Singa will notify you and provide instructions before your renewal date.

  • This means that you will get a request to verify your identity for at least every sixth payment. This also applies to existing Singa Premium subscriptions, not just new ones.

  • If your bank requires authentication for an upcoming renewal, we'll email you in advance with a secure link so you can approve the payment before your renewal date. A confirmation request and a link for verification will also appear on your account page when you are signed in to Singa's browser version.

  • We recommend that you complete the confirmation process as soon as possible to ensure your subscription continues without interruption. If we do not receive a payment confirmation, we will not be able to renew your subscription and this will result in your subscription being discontinued. Your subscription will then automatically switch to our free tier service.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why am I being asked to authenticate again?

Your bank occasionally requires additional verification to protect against fraud.

Will this happen every month?

Usually not. Most subscription renewals happen automatically, but your bank may occasionally request authentication.

Can Singa skip authentication?

No. Authentication requirements are determined by your bank under European payment regulations.

Can I disable Strong Customer Authentication?

No. This security requirement is controlled by your bank.

Troubleshooting

What if I don't receive an authentication request?

  • Check your banking app.

  • Make sure notifications are enabled.

  • Contact your bank if authentication never appears.

What if authentication fails?

  • Try again.

  • Verify you're using the correct banking credentials.

  • Contact your bank if the issue persists.

Why did my subscription stop?

If authentication wasn't completed before renewal, the bank may decline the payment and the subscription cannot renew automatically.
